RE: Liner system
I’m working on a project that will have a liner system as follows (from top to bottom):

  • 12in. min.—chipped tires
  • 3ft min.—recompacted mancos shale (max hydraulic conductivity 1×10-7cm/sec)
  • Prepared subgrade

Are there any internal friction angle results for either the tires or the shale? (No site data has been performed.)

(Melissa | Colorado)

Reply: I am quite sure that there is nothing available on geomembrane to chipped tires but I suspect that the shear strength would be quite high.

Regarding the geomembrane to recompacted shale, the closest is probably against clay soils of which much is known. If you give me the type of geomembrane (including smooth or rough), I can give you some ballpark values … Bob Koerner
