The Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) will host an online course entitled “Course 1: Quality Assurance/Quality Control of Geosynthetics in Waste Containment Facilities,” Oct. 16–18, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT each day. Robert M. Koerner and George Koerner will teach the course. This is the first GSI online course for which all Geosynthetic Materials Association (GMA) member companies and their employees will receive discounted rates on course registration.
In this online course, quality assurance (QA)/quality control (QC) in specifications and testing of geosynthetics as placed in critical applications will be emphasized. It focuses on both the manufacturing of geosynthetics and on the installation processes. Applications are in waste containment (i.e., landfills and surface impoundments), but there will be applicability to ponds/reservoirs, canals, shale gas plays, coal combustion residuals, heap leach pads, etc.
The online course will include the following presentations:
- Waste issues, regulations and geosynthetics
- Geomembrane manufacturing, specifications and testing
- Geomembrane placement and field testing
- Geosynthetic clay liners
- Geosynthetic drainage systems
- Ancillary geosynthetics, clay liners and documentation
The course provides the latest information on manufacturing and installation of all types of geosynthetics. It follows closely the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Technical Guidance Document (EPA/600R-93/18) of the same title as this course. Included are manufacturing QA/QC, as well as construction QA/QC. The course is descriptive with numerous example situations, case histories and test methods/procedures. PowerPoint slides of the entire course will be provided.
This course will be beneficial for QA/QC organizations; design and specification engineering firms; manufacturers of geosynthetic materials; installation contractors; owners of facilities; engineering consultants; federal, state and regional agency personnel (both environmental and transportation); and private developers.
Participants in this course will receive 8 professional development hours (PDH). If a participant desires certification under the Geosynthetic Certification Institute-Inspectors Certification Program (GCI-ICP), a separate registration and examination is required. The course costs $750.00 for GSI and GMA members, and $1,000.00 for nonmembers.
