IGS North America update: Two honors, two websites

IGS-NA | October 1, 2023 | By: Ben Leshchinsky

IGS North America (IGS-NA) has a couple of website updates to promote:

We’ve relaunched our chapter website at igs-na.org. This update is a few years overdue—which feels like a very long time online. We will be using the new site to further promote the achievements of our members and our chapter benefactors. There is even a chapter benefactor map to identify where our key corporate support comes from. We invite members of all levels—students, individuals and benefactors—to share your news with the chapter manager (info@igs-na.org) so we can share it on the site and in social.

We’ve launched the website for the 13th International Conference on Geosynthetics (13 ICG)! IGS North America’s leadership promoted 13 ICG (13icg-montreal.org) in Rome, Italy, in September at 12 ICG. We congratulate the 12 ICG organizing committee in Italy on staging a magnificent event, and our Canada/U.S.-led team looks forward to staging a highly successful ICG in Montreal, Que., Canada, September 13–17, 2026.

Two honors to announce

During the February 2023 IGS North America General Assembly at the Geosynthetics Conference (Kansas City, Mo.), former IGS-NA president Bob Mackey encouraged the chapter to relight its awards program. With Mackey’s help, the board welcomed the idea and created an awards subcommittee. Two awards immediately came out of the first post-conference board meeting.

We are proud to announce that Dr. Jorge Zornberg, P.E., and Dr. Richard Bathurst, P.Eng, have been awarded honorary member status in the chapter.

Both members have impeccable records in the field and have contributed substantially to civil engineering and the IGS. Both are past presidents of the IGS and both have been honored with IGS lectures named in their honor. They continue to build their careers, and with regards to IGS-NA’s upcoming events, Dr. Zornberg is serving as advisory chair for GeoAmericas 2024 (geoamericas2024.org) in Toronto, Ont., Canada, and Dr. Bathurst is an advisory chair for 13 ICG 2026 in Montreal.

Dr. Zornberg and Dr. Bathurst are only the fourth and fifth members to receive this recognition in IGS-NA’s 35-year history. They join Dr. Kerry Rowe, Dr. Ian Peggs and Robert Carroll on the chapter’s roster of honorary members.

Thank you for being part of our engineering community!
