McCartney letter and IGS-NA happenings

IGS-NA | August 1, 2019 | By:

IGS North America (IGS-NA) welcomes two new members to the board of directors. The board voted to add Kate Patterson of Klohn Crippen Berger as a co-opted board member. Patterson is a civil and water resources engineer in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and brings a new perspective to the board of directors on geosynthetics in water resource applications. The board also voted to add Professor Jie Han of the University of Kansas as a liaison board member representing the International Geosynthetics Society. In addition to bringing his many years of geosynthetics research experience to the board, Han will help our society build closer relationships with our parent organization.

Educate the Educators

IGS-NA is planning its third Educate the Educators (EtE) event at the University of California, San Diego, Dec. 9–10, 2019. The event is a follow-up to IGS-NA’s successful EtE event held in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in December 2017. The 2019 EtE event will be a focused, two-day specialized training where leading experts and educators equip college and university professors to teach geosynthetics at their schools. Participants need only pay their travel costs to La Jolla, Calif. Funding from industry, the International Geosynthetics Society and the members of IGS North America will be used to run the event and host our participants. Additional information is available at www.igs-na.org. IGS-NA would like to extend a special thank-you to our 2019 event sponsors (as of May 1): CETCO, TenCate Geosynthetics Americas and Solmax. An updated list of sponsors is available on the website.

Geosynthetics Conference 2020: CASE STUDIES

Geosynthetics Conference 2020: CASE STUDIES, to be held March 8–10, 2020, will feature a variety of 30-minute, in-depth geosynthetics case studies highlighting the many unique uses of geosynthetics during this specialized edition of the highly respected Geosynthetics Conference. Start making plans to present, exhibit and attend this exciting new event. We are looking forward to holding the first IGS-NA workshop during the conference. More details on this workshop will be sent to IGS-NA members and will be posted on the conference website (www.GeosyntheticsConference.com) and on the IGS-NA website (www.igs-na-com).

GeoAmericas—4th PanAmerican Conference on Geosynthetics

After been held in Mexico in 2008, Peru in 2012 and the U.S. in 2016, GeoAmericas comes to Brazil in its fourth edition, which will be held April 26–29, 2020, in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to a rich technical program focused on the most relevant topics for the technical community of geosynthetics today, several social events and a wide area for technical exhibits for the geosynthetics industry will be offered. English is the official language, but activities in Spanish and Portuguese will also compose the event’s program. We anticipate more than 1,000 participants from more than 30 countries, which ensures both broad representativeness and a plurality of cultures and markets. Visit www.geoamericas2020.com for more information.
