In August 2017, the Erosion Control Technology Council (ECTC) updated its Rolled Erosion Control Products (RECPs) specification. The specifications include charts of product characteristics for mulch control nettings (MCNs), open weave textiles (OWTs), erosion control blankets (ECBs) and turf reinforcement mats (TRMs). These charts are the result of consensus among leading manufacturers of RECPs and are designed to satisfy the needs of engineers, designers and other end users of these products.

“The charts contained in the specification were developed based upon the input of many people in the erosion control industry,” Diane Hitt, ECTC’s board of directors chair, told WaterOnline.com. “They are designed to assist . . . in selecting the proper products for [a] specific job site.”

The specifications include both temporary and permanent RECPs. For temporary RECPs, ECTC includes figures and information for composition, C-factor, shear stress, mechanical and transverse direction tensile strength (ASTM D6818), thickness (ASTM D6525), ground coverage (ASTM D6567), mass (ASTM D6475) and maximum installed slope steepness. For permanent RECPs, including TRMs and high-performance turf reinforcement mats (HPTRMs), ECTC includes figures and information for composition, maximum slope gradient, unvegetated and vegetated shear stress (ASTM D6460), seedling emergence (ASTM D7322), mechanical and transverse direction tensile strength (ASTM D6818), mass (ASTM D6566), thickness (ASTM D6525) and UV stability (ASTM D4355).
