Erie County DPW awarded 2015 Transportation Project of the Year

The American Public Works Association honored the Erie County Department of Public Works with the 2015 Transportation Project of the Year award for the Lake Avenue Reconstruction Project.

The project included a full reconstruction of two miles of Lake Ave. between Abbott Rd. and Southwestern Blvd. in Orchard Park, N.Y.. Last reconstructed in the early 1970s, the roadway was experiencing pavement deterioration due to poor subbase materials and subgrade drainage.

Geogrid reinforcement was used as an innovative and cost-effective solution during reconstruction. The geogrid reduced the amount of excavation necessary and made it possible to reinforce the entire two-mile length. The roadway was also re-sized to meet the county’s standard for urban minor arterial roadways.

To avoid conflicts with school buses and accommodate utility facility locations, construction on the $3 million project began in July and included installation of cross culverts and a longitudinal underdrain beneath the road surface to address drainage issues.

Joining DPW in receiving the award were project contractor, Accadia Site contracting Inc. and design and construction team members T.Y. Lin International, Foit-Albert Associates and EmpireGEO Services Inc.
