Landfill cooling?
If the difference in temperature between wet waste and the ambient environment contributes to cooling of leachate, is it not appropriate to design landfills with cooling systems to enhance both the rate of degradation and the economic use of additional air space? Many thanks,

(Jo | South Africa)

Hi Jo,
Each stage of wet landfilling results in higher temperatures until you arrive at aerobic considerations where the issue of landfill fire becomes problematic. That said, to artificially cool the waste would be a major uphill battle from a cost perspective. Also, I think that the warmer the temperature the more rapid the degradation, not the other way around. Thanks for asking.
