Strength testing

Subject: Strength testing— Is there now, or in the works, any industry standard for strength testing the extrusion weld connecting 60-mil HDPE to the poly-loc embedded strip? (Bob, Wisconsin)

Reply: There are no generic standards or specifications for the situation you describe. People tend to copy sketches and materials from others that seem appropriate. I have never seen full-scale tests, and certainly never long-term exposure or usage tests. The unfortunate situation covers all types of penetrations and appurtenances, not just the one you refer to.

That doesn’t mean that there is no need. In fact, our GRI-22 Conference will be devoted to the theme of geosynthetic details and is titled, “The Devil is in the Details.” This conference will be held in Salt Lake City in February 2009. Your specific item will be included. Sorry to make you wait, but it’s the best I can offer at this time.
