Solmax announces strategic consolidation of European nonwoven production facilities

News | December 4, 2024 | By:

Solmax, a leading global manufacturer of geosynthetics, has unveiled plans to consolidate and enhance its EMEA nonwoven geotextile manufacturing operations by centralizing them into a single, state-of-the-art facility. This strategic move is designed to boost efficiency, improve quality control, and enable a more agile response to market demands, positioning the company for sustained success.

As part of this consolidation, Solmax will gradually wind down production at its site in Linz, Austria, and relocate those operations, along with its current site in Bezons, France, to a new, advanced facility located near Paris. This transition is expected to unfold over the next two years.

Solmax recognizes the impact of this decision on production employees at the Linz site and is pleased to confirm that a social plan has been agreed upon with the local works councils and unions to support those affected. This plan includes financial assistance, career transition services, and other resources to help employees navigate the change.

Additionally, Solmax will continue to have a site in the Linz area to serve customers in the region, ensuring uninterrupted support and maintaining strong customer relationships during this transition period and beyond, reflecting Solmax’s unwavering commitment to delivering excellence.

Establishing a center of excellence for nonwoven geotextiles

The decision to consolidate sites is driven by the need to address sustainability challenges and maintain Solmax’s leadership in the market. By bringing operations together under one roof, the company expects to enhance operational efficiency, reduce the environmental footprint, and ensure the long-term viability of its business in the region.

“Nonwovens are a cornerstone of our EMEA business and play a vital role in advancing Solmax’s leadership in the geosynthetics markets,” said Bob Gilligan, CEO of Solmax. “This relocation is a bold and necessary step to elevate our operational excellence, strengthen our competitive edge, and ensure we remain agile and resilient in an evolving industry.”

Consolidating production in a more efficient facility will allow Solmax to lower energy consumption, reduce waste, and better align with sustainable practices, reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmental and operational sustainability.

Commitment to employees

Solmax is committed to supporting all employees affected by this transition. The company will provide extensive support to ensure a smooth and gradual relocation process, giving employees ample time to adjust.

“We are fully committed to supporting our employees throughout this process,” added Jan-Willem Heezen, Managing Director, EMEA. “Our goal is to build a stronger, more secure business while ensuring that our team members have the resources and support they need.”

Looking ahead

This strategic consolidation represents a significant investment in the future of Solmax’s EMEA operations. By modernizing and streamlining its production processes, the company aims to strengthen its position as a leader in the geosynthetics market and prepare for continued growth.

“We are confident that these steps will bring us closer to our customers, allowing us to provide better service and simplify our supply chain,” said Heezen. “Business relations and service levels will remain unchanged. Solmax remains fully dedicated to delivering on our commitments with operational excellence in our products and service offerings.”
