FGI Webinar – Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil-Integrated Bridge System for Transportation Bridge Construction – August 4

News | August 3, 2022 | By:

A webinar on the Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil–Integrated Bridge System (GRS–IBS) for Transportation Bridge Construction will take place August 4 at noon CDT. Presenters are Jennifer Nicks, a research geotechnical engineer with the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Infrastructure R&D at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center, and Michael Adams, a research geotechnical engineer with the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) Office of Infrastructure R&D in McLean, Va. The pre-recorded webinar will also be available August 5 at noon AEST for Australia, August 5 at noon CAT for South Africa, and August 8 at 5 p.m. JST for Japan. It is free to industry professionals and students with a 1.0 PDH available.

The Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Integrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS) is a fast, cost-effective method of bridge support with proven performance. This presentation will provide an overview of geosynthetic reinforced soil concepts, particularly for load bearing applications; describe the GRS-IBS; summarize recommended design steps and construction procedures; provide data related to in-service performance of these structures; and outline ongoing GRS research and development at the FHWA.

For over a decade, Nicks has managed a research program focused on geotechnical infrastructure design. She co-authored the FHWA’s Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil – Integrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS) Design and Construction Guidelines and is the past chair of the Transportation Research Board’s Standing Committee on Geosynthetics. Additionally, she serves on research project panels and technical committees for national and international organizations. She earned her Bachelor of Science, Master of Engineering, and doctorate degrees in civil engineering at Texas A&M University and is a licensed professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Adams has over 25 years of experience in conducting and managing geotechnical research. His primary focus areas are geosynthetic reinforced soil technologies, bridge foundations, instrumentation and load testing methodologies, and geotechnical aspects of pavements research. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and is a 2008 Engineering News Record Top 25 Newsmaker, a recipient of a 2009 Nova Award for construction innovation in the development of the GRS-IBS, and author of the FHWA’s Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil – Integrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS) Design and Construction Guidelines.
