IGS-NA, News | August 1, 2018 | By:

In this edition of the IGS-NA News column, the board of directors gives a special thank-you to John Allen for putting together a strong list of speakers for our educational webinars this year.

IGS-NA supports Geosynthetics Conference 2019

The North American Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS-NA) supports the next edition of the long-running Geosynthetics Conference, which is organized by the Geosynthetic Materials Association, to be held Feb. 10–13, 2019, at the Marriott Marquis in Houston, Texas. IGS-NA encourages its members to attend our meeting at the conference to provide guidance and strategy for the organization for 2019 and beyond to grow the use of geosynthetics in civil engineering projects. The meeting date and location will be posted in the conference program. For more information, visit www.GeosyntheticsConference.com.

IGS-NA establishes service award

IGS-NA has established an Excellence in Service Award to recognize members who have shown outstanding leadership and dedication to the objectives of IGS-NA or the geosynthetics industry. Award recipients must be an IGS-NA member in good standing or have been an IGS-NA member at the time the services to be recognized were performed. Recipients may be individuals (one or more than one), corporations or students.

Those considered for the award shall have excelled with regard to one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Provided leadership in advancing geosynthetics education and research
  2. Created opportunities to collect, evaluate and disseminate knowledge on all matters relevant to geosynthetics and their application
  3. Organized technical conferences, seminars and workshops
  4. Advanced training of current users of geosynthetics
  5. Advanced science and technology of geosynthetics and their applications
  6. Trained future users of geosynthetics
  7. Trained geosynthetic educators
  8. Promoted of geosynthetics as part of engineering curricula
  9. Targeted impactful new members of IGS-NA
  10. Improved communication with members of IGS-NA
  11. Enhanced partnerships with associated organizations

The first edition of the award(s) will be presented at the Geosynthetics Conference 2019 in Houston, Texas. Nominations for award recipients may be made at any time by IGS-NA members or the IGS-NA board of directors with a deadline of Oct. 1, 2018. Please send your nominations to brachman@queensu.ca.

Hundreds of people and dozens of companies have contributed to the evolution and success of IGS-NA (formerly NAGS) over the past 30-plus years. Thus, with the establishment of this award, we have an opportunity to recognize a great number of deserving and outstanding members, peers and friends.

IGS-NA 2018 webinars

GS-NA continues to provide informative and educational geosynthetics-related webinars. Board member John Allen has put together an impressive lineup of speakers this past year and for webinars coming this fall.

September
Tim Stark of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
“Seaming PVC: Everything You Need to Know”

October
Boyd Ramsey of Boyd Ramsey Consulting and Richard Brachman of Queen’s University
“Barrier Systems Follow-Up from IGS GeoReinforcement and GeoBarriers Workshops”

November
Ben Leshchinsky of Oregon State University
“Reinforcement Modeling”

December
Boyd Ramsey of Boyd Ramsey Consulting
“ASCE Ethics Canons & Geosynthetics”

Over the last couple of months, IGS-NA held several technical webinars, and we look forward to holding more of them in 2019. Should you be interested in participating as a speaker on behalf of our organization, please contact one of our board members. This past May, Markus Wilke from HUESKER presented “Erosion Control with Geosynthetics.” Mike Pluimer of the University of Minnesota presented “Geopipes” in July.

Another webinar topic was on “Recent Developments in Geosynthetics-Stabilized Roads,” presented by Jie Han of the University of Kansas. IGS-NA thanks our presenters for their time and hard work in presenting and sharing their expertise to promote the use of geosynthetics to the engineering community at large.

IGS-NA will continue to provide webinars throughout 2019. Members receive one free webinar coupon upon paying annual dues. Membership registration/renewal can be done at www.igs-na.org. If you would like to provide a technical webinar, please submit your proposal to a board member or directly to info@igs-na.org.
