The Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) has opened the Call for Papers for the annual Student Paper Competition and Young Professor Competition. Abstracts are due on Friday, March 9, 2018. The winners are invited to attend DFI’s 43rd Annual Conference on Deep Foundations, October 24–27, 2018, in Anaheim, Calif., to present their papers. Winners also receive free conference registration, two nights of lodging and a $1,000 stipend for travel expenses. Both the winner and first runner-up will receive a library of up to 20 DFI publications and a gratis two-year DFI Individual Membership. Their winning papers will be published in a future DFI Journal volume.
The criteria for students entering this competition are as follows:
- The student must be enrolled in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program.
- The focus of study must be engineering/construction/geological sciences.
- The paper must be based on the student’s own work and be her/his own writing.
- The paper must be primarily concerned with the design and construction of deep foundations/excavations.

The criteria for young professors entering this competition are as follows:
- The paper must be primarily concerned with the design and construction of deep foundations/excavations.
- The candidate professor should be a full-time, entry-level member of the faculty of an accredited college or university, engaged in teaching and/or research in professional fields including engineering/construction/geological sciences.
- The paper must be based on the professor’s own work and may include contributions from the professor’s research.
