DOT highlights grim state of U.S. roads and bridges

News | July 14, 2015 | By:

In a July 9 press release, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) noted that the Highway Trust Fund is set to expire July 31. Without action from Congress, federal funding for transportation will come to a halt. And with it, so will traffic in many places across the country.

During the last six years, Congress has passed 33 short-term measures rather than funding transportation for the long term. The DOT release stated: “… our transportation system—our roads and bridges especially—is in a dire state of disrepair … The table of state-by-state road and bridge conditions, shown below, demonstrates this.”

The statistics for the USDOT’s bridge and road conditions come from 2013 data from the Federal Highway Administration and the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2013 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure.
