Liner root penetration

News, Q&A: GMA Techline | June 1, 2015 | By:

Geomembrane testing? Root penetration?
Welding HDPE with LLDPE? Woven geopipe?

Questions and answers from the GMA Techline

I have a liner/cap that consists of 2 feet of soil, a double-sided 6-ounce geotextile drainage composite, and a 40-mil textured LLDPE. I have a regulatory comment to address: “Will the cover-liner be susceptible to damage through root penetration, from volunteer tree growth post mining.”

I haven’t been able to find any information
on this issue. Can you help?

Claude,

I have seen weeds growing through geomembranes but only if there is a hole to begin with. That said, I don’t know of, nor have I ever seen, weeds or roots growing through intact geomembranes. This substantiates that proper CQC and CQA are always necessary when installing and backfilling geomembranes.
