Geosynthetics at the Olympics

News | August 1, 2008 | By:

Look carefully at the venues for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Geosynthetics may not be obviously apparent, but a re-examination of the many new locales built for this enormous event should offer plenty of possibilities. Examples include:

  • Millions of square meters of geosynthetic liners and geomembranes installed to help create ponds and lakes, rowing and canoeing courses, and swimming venues.
  • 720,000m2 of HDPE geomembrane were rolled out and welded together to line the Shunyi Rowing-Canoeing Park.
  • 550,000m2 of geosynthetic clay liner were used to build the dragon-shaped Olympic Forest Park Lake.
