FLI Environmental, the Waterford, Ireland-based international environmental solutions provider, has won a $12.3 million (€10 million) contract for the installation of containment facilities at a $1.9 billion nickel mine on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. FLI will supply and install geosynthetic lining systems for the mine-site’s process lagoons and tanks, as well as the construction of a residue storage facility on the island of New Caledonia, 1,000 miles east of Australia.
The contract is part of the $1.9 billion Goro Nickel Project, the largest nickel development operation ever planned. New Caledonia is estimated to have approximately 25% of the world’s known nickel reserves. FLI has previously worked on mining projects in Uzbekistan, Spain, Papua New Guinea, and Ireland.
Alan Green, from FLI France, will manage the New Caledonia project.
“An installation team of 25 people will comprise Irish and French employees of FLI who will spend two years completing installations covering 200 acres at the mine site, 60 km from Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia,” said Michael Flynn, FLI founder and managing director.
Last year, FLI Environmental acquired the UK land reclamation and remediation company, Vertase, and is now among the world’s leading suppliers of contaminated land remediation solutions.
“Our base in Waterford, where we began operations in 1989, will continue to supply the technical expertise and coordination of our projects which now stretch from many Irish locations to the UK, France and the rest of Europe and, most recently, to New Caledonia,” Flynn said.
