ASTM formed dimple board standard

Q&A: GMA Techline | June 1, 2022 | By:

Q: Which American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test would you recommend for tear evaluation of formed dimple board? I am aware of D1004, but can this test be performed on formed dimple board?

A: ASTM has five tear methods commonly used in geosynthetics. They are listed below.

  1. ASTM D751 Trouser Tear (4 × 8 inch [100 × 200 mm] specimen)
  2. ASTM D1004 Graves 90°
  3. ASTM D1424 or ASTM D1922 Elmendorf Tear
  4. ASTM D4533 Trapezoidal Tear
  5. ASTM D5884 Trouser Tear (8 × 8 inch [200 × 200 mm] specimen)

For a formed dimple board, I would recommend ASTM D5884. It has the largest specimen size of 8 × 8 inches (200 × 200 mm) and is the most repeatable test of the bunch.
