IGS launches university lecture series

Students can hear from some of the International Geosynthetics Society’s (IGS’s) most eminent experts via new university lecture series videos.

The 30- to 60-minute recorded talks aim to widen access to and understanding of geosynthetics for those at the start of their engineering careers, particularly senior undergraduates and graduate students. The content has been developed by experts at the IGS and its technical committees.

The initial launch series covers the basics of geosynthetics in four videos. These are:

·        An introduction to geosynthetics

·        Geosynthetic products and manufacture

·        Geosynthetic properties and testing

·        Geosynthetic functions

The second series under development will explore geosynthetics applications including transportation, environmental, hydraulic and sustainability. Further series are in the pipeline.

The development of the lecture series was initiated by IGS President Chungsik Yoo and supported by the IGS Council. Other professors involved in the development include former council member and lecturer Erol Guler, Bogazici University, Turkey; publication committee chairman Erol Tutumluer, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA; education committee chairman Takeshi Katsumi, Kyoto University, Japan; and project lead Jie Han, University of Kansas, USA.

“At the IGS we’re always striving to widen the access and knowledge of geosynthetics to everyone, but especially those at the start of their engineering careers,” Han says. “The development and rollout of this ongoing project will help us to further reach these groups to inform, educate and inspire. Thanks to everyone who is helping to achieve these important aims.”
