Additional comment added to GMA Techline answer

News | August 1, 2012 | By:

Editor’s Note: The following question was addressed in the GMA Techline answers from Bob Koerner (Geosynthetics, June 2012). A further comment has now been added.

Question

Can you please guide me to suppliers of high-temp, approx. 215 F (100 C) liners? Also, the liner should be able to handle up to 200,000ppm TDS (total dissolved solids) of salts. I am looking for HDPE or similar liner.

Wow, what a question! My answer might not be to your liking but here it is: The highest that geomembrane manufacturers recommend for usage is between 150–170 F. Even then, you will not get a 20-year warranty since at these high temperatures the degradation mechanisms (oxidation mainly) are most active. Of course, different resins behave differently and you might inquire [with manufacturers] about EPDM (ethlylene propylene diene monomer), which is a thermoset polymer.

Bob,
We did some testing on various liners for the company that Mukesh works with and developed expected design life periods for the different materials. We agree 20 years design life at 100 deg C is unlikely to be achieved with high-density polyethylene. EDPM is a significantly higher cost liner.
