The Flexible Geomembrane Institute will be hosting a free webinar at Noon CDT, July 9, 2026.
With most testing and properties being determined at above freezing temperatures, this has resulted in potentially incorrect design applications for geomembranes used in cold regions. This study sought to develop a new testing method which can capture the effects of temperature and freeze-thaw cycling on the performance characteristics of geomembranes at temperatures between 20°C to -80°C that had undergone up to 60 freeze-thaw cycles. Material properties were found to vary based on number of freeze-thaw cycles and material temperatures. All test results show high repeatability indicating that this new testing method can be used to assess cold weather performance of geomembranes.
The webinar will be presented by Bret Lingwall & Calvin Thom of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
