He succeeds Sam Allen, who will continue to serve on the Council as Past President. Dr. Laura Carbone has been elected as the IGS Vice President. They, and 10 newly elected Council Members, will begin their terms this September and serve until 2030.

Cazzuffi previously served as the IGS President from 2002–2006 and now returns to the role after being re-elected.

“First of all, my sincere thanks to all IGS Individual and IGS Corporate Members for the impressive support I’ve received worldwide towards my IGS Presidency in the next term 2026 – 2030,” he said. “Compared to two decades ago, when I completed my first successful mandate as IGS President, the overall boundary conditions have completely changed, both in economical terms and in geopolitical constraints.

“Thus, now it’s time to start a vigorous process of re-addressing the scope and the duties of our learned society, in continuity with the past, but looking for a stronger IGS, expanding its global reach and strengthening its actual impact on the world’s most crucial challenges.”

Carbone currently serves as IGS Secretary General and looks forward to continuing to support the Society in her new role.

“I am deeply honored to be elected to serve as Vice President of the International Geosynthetics Society,” she said. “The IGS thrives because of the dedication, expertise, and passion of its global membership, and I am grateful for the trust placed in me.”

The other newly elected Council Members are Patricia Guerra-Escobar (UK), Daigo Ishii (Japan), Xunmei Liang (China), Ioannis Markou (Greece), Nicola Moraci (Italy), Ernest Olinic (Romania), Francisco Pizarro (Chile), Sven Schroer (Germany), Amir Shahkolahi (Australia), Erol Tutumluer (USA).
