Senate passes transportation bill, waits on House action

The U.S. House could vote as soon as Tuesday on a package of funding bills to end the partial government shutdown.

Among the legislation is funding for the U.S. Department of Transportation through the end of the government’s fiscal year, September 30. It also covers the Departments of Defense, Health and Human Services, Education, Labor, Housing and Urban Development, Treasury, and State.

The Senate passed the bills Friday evening, plus a two-week extension of funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which includes immigration enforcement.

The House had originally passed the bills as a single package January 22, but after the shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Democrats in the Senate wanted additional accountability measures included in DHS funding. The Senate and White House reached a deal to separate the bills, and now the House will need to approve the new bill.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said House will start action on the package Monday. Passage will likely be by a narrow vote if it happens, as Democratic House leaders have said they will not support the bill. Some members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus have expressed concerns about the bill as well. Republicans have only one vote to spare if every Democrat votes against the bill.
