Q: Could you please let me know if there is any information available on risks associated with installing a geomembrane? Our CQA inspector is pressing us for this because the owner is doing a risk assessment of the geosynthetic installation process.
A: Common injuries associated with geosynthetic installation include electric shock, burns, lacerations, pinches, muscle strains and falls. Field technicians should be in good physical shape and be able to communicate with other site personnel. They should also be able to read and understand the site policy and procedure documents related to health and safety.
To minimize safety hazards, you can:
- Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to train personnel properly
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as heat-resistant gloves, steel-toed shoes, protective glasses and flameproof clothing
- Ensure there is a fire extinguisher available in the area and employees know how to extinguish a fire
- Ensure air testing is conducted whenever working in confined spaces
- Ensure no flammable materials are present in the area
