COMANCO has completed phase 1 of a coal ash landfill closure for a renewable energy facility in central Florida. This project has been strategically divided into four stages, allowing for a more efficient and controlled execution. The strategy helps to prevent the creation of open areas that could pose environmental hazards. Each stage will include earthwork, liner installation, and pipe installation, requiring the team to display a range of skills. Completing this closure will maintain the quality of the surrounding environment by preventing the leakage of contaminants into surrounding groundwater and soil.
The landfill is associated with coal thermoelectric generation residues. To complete stage one, COMANCO prepared the liner subgrade and constructed haul routes within the landfill to improve accessibility. Additionally, the crew is installing approximately five acres of liner on the first slope. The liner installation will be followed by a pipe system that will control the flow of rainwater on the slopes. Finally, the slope will be covered by another earth layer acting as a protective cover.
Phase 2 will continue the same process on the next slope. The project’s total size, which includes each slope and the top of the landfill, is 31 acres. COMANCO will utilize 1,341,155 SF of Atarfil 60-mil Textured HDPE Liner and 1,339,077 SF of Skaps TN330-2-8 Double-Sided Geocomposite to close the coal ash landfill. This multi-layered geosynthetic system will reinforce the structure of the coal ash landfill and provide an impermeable barrier between the coal ash and the external environment.
The successful completion of this landfill liner installation project will positively impact the surrounding environment while allowing the facility to continue generating much-needed power from various energy sources. The project will help protect local ecosystems and ensure the facility’s long-term sustainability by effectively containing toxic materials and preventing water contamination.
COMANCO’s commitment to environmental stewardship and expertise in landfill liner installation is instrumental in making this project successful. As the project progresses, the company looks forward to sharing further updates and highlighting the positive outcomes.
