The Fabricated Geomembrane Institute is presenting the webinar – Geosynthetics Case Studies – on August 22, 2024 at noon CDT. Pre-recorded times are:
August 23, 2024 at Noon AEST (Pre-recorded – Australia)
August 23, 2024 at Noon CAT (Pre-recorded – South Africa)
August 23, 2024 at 5 pm JST (Pre-recorded – Japan)
This webinar will address three case studies in the geosynthetics industry. Jashwin Bhalla (Fabtach Australia) will present the Potts Hill Reservoir Project, the largest water reservoir with a floating cover system in the Southern Hemisphere. Ron MacKenzie (Inland Tarp & Liner) will discuss Above Ground Storage Tanks Liners for Energy Applications. Finally, Brian Frasier (Layfield Geosynthetics) will present the Upper Chiquita Floating Cover and Bottom Liner Project, one of the deepest and most challenging floating cover projects that Layfield has ever installed.
Potts Hill Water Reservoirs #1 and #2 are located in Sydney, Australia. The reservoirs store potable water and are operated by the Sydney Water Authority, which is owned by the state government. Originally open lagoons with a capacity of 900 million liters, the storages were re-engineered reducing the total capacity and introducing geosynthetic lining materials with fully sealed floating covers to minimize evaporation, reduce temperature fluctuations, eliminate UV effects on water quality and the ingress of contaminants.
The benefits and uses of fabricated geosynthetics for aboveground storage will be explored. The differences in bucket and tapered liners for aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) will be discussed. Learn more about choosing the right style and composition for your containment needs. A review of what makes AST designs unique will be presented, as well as why the choice of geosynthetic material matters.
The Upper Chiquita Reservoir is a large potable water reservoir located in Rancho Santa Margarita in Orange County, California. The reservoir contains 244 million gallons of domestic water and covers an area of 18 acres. The reservoir was constructed on the western slope of the Chiquita Canyon by creating an earthen dam across the canyon. The reservoir is lined and covered with geosynthetic barrier materials with a defined-sump style cover. This case history details the construction of the reservoir lining and cover system including some of the unusual design details caused by the shape and depth of the project. The presentation will also discuss the difficulties caused by the excessive rainfall and the solutions to a leakage issue that developed after construction.
