The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently welcomed U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new FHWA Pavement Testing Facility.
The facility will use rapid pavement testing of full-scale structures to evaluate the durability of both new and existing pavement materials. As part of the new facility, there are 11 testing lanes that are instrumented with equipment such as moisture sensors, lateral and vertical pressure cells, and soil compression gauges.
Research related to preservation, resilience, design methodologies, and geotechnical aspects of pavements are currently planned for the facility. For more information, visit the website or contact the facility manager, Mike Adams.
