FGI offers webinar on the Yeager Airport RSS failure

Events | December 15, 2020 | By:

The Fabricated Geomembrane Institute (FGI) will sponsor a webinar, “Yeager Airport RSS Failure: Forensic Limit Equilibrium and FLAC Analyses,” on Jan. 14, 2021, at Noon CST. The webinar is free to industry professionals and students, and 1.0 professional development hour (PDH) is available.

This webinar will discuss the forensic limit equilibrium and continuum deformation analyses used to investigate the 2015 reinforced slope failure at the Yeager Airport near Charleston, W.V. This 220-foot  (67-meter) high reinforced soil slope (RSS) failed about eight years after construction with the compound failure surface passing beneath, partially behind, and partially through the reinforced soil mass. Inverse 2D and 3D limit equilibrium analyses were used to evaluate laboratory derived strength parameters, slope geometry, soil reinforcement configuration and the importance of modeling the anisotropic behavior of the uniaxial geogrids used. Finite difference continuum deformation analyses were also conducted to understand the internal stresses and deformations of the RSS prior to failure and kinematics of the slope failure. The results of these various analyses will be discussed and are consistent with post failure field observations.
