Contractors install TenCate wicking geosynthetic for Trans-Alaska Pipeline highway

The Alaska Department of Transportation (AKDOT) continually faces frost heave problems in the state’s roadways. The Dalton Highway is the only road between Fairbanks and the Prudhoe Bay town of Deadhorse, paralleling the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. This road performs a critical link in supporting the needs of moving oil from the North Slope to the lower 48 states. Frost heave is a constant problem on the highway. AKDOT selected TenCate Mirafi® H2Ri wicking geosynthetic to address the problem of frost heave.


IGS releases new edition of the ‘Guide to the Specification of Geosynthetics’

The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) has released the fifth edition of the “Guide to the Specification of Geosynthetics.” The objective of this document is to be a generic guide and aid to those writing geosynthetic specifications. Continental installs first solar floating reservoir cover in Cyprus

German company Continental announced that it had installed the first floating solar cover in the Republic of Cyprus, to protect water collected in a reservoir in the Limassol District against evaporation and unwanted contamination. At the same time, the photovoltaic modules integrated in the film on the cover generate electricity from solar energy, the company said, and the electricity generated is used to power systems that pump the water. The solar film enables water to be transported to remote regions via solar-powered pumping stations and reservoirs.


QA/QC for geosynthetics in waste containment is focus of GSI course, GMA members get discounted rates

The Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) will host an online course entitled “Course 1: Quality Assurance/Quality Control of Geosynthetics in Waste Containment Facilities,” Oct. 16–18, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT each day. Robert M. Koerner and George R. Koerner will teach the course. This is the first GSI online course for which all Geosynthetic Materials Association (GMA) member companies and their employees will receive discounted rates on course registration. Hanes Geo Components purchases DDD Erosion Control

Hanes Geo Components, of Winston-Salem, N.C., announced the company had acquired DDD Erosion Control Inc. of Ashburn, Ga. “DDD Erosion Control is a leader in the manufacturing and distribution of Silt Fence, a core product segment for Hanes Geo Components,” John Dowdell, president of Hanes Geo Components, said in a prepared statement. “In addition, their location in Ashburn, Ga., will improve our service capabilities throughout southern Georgia and into northern Florida.”


Koch Membrane Systems selected for China project

Koch Membrane Systems Inc. (Koch) publicized that its PURON® Membrane Bio-Reactor (MBR) modules had been selected for the Ji’nan Wastewater Treatment Plant I and Plant II Expansion Project in Shandong Province, China. Strict new discharge requirements by the Chinese government are forcing municipalities to upgrade or build their wastewater treatment plants using new technologies like the Koch MBR modules.
