“Product Selector” for road reconstruction with TenCate Polyfelt

News | May 13, 2021 | By:

The digital specification assistant for asphalt pavement interlayers from TenCate Geosynthetics enables product selection for asphalt pavement interlayers. Based on four simple criteria, the best technical solution can be proposed for maintenance work.

The selection of the optimal product is an essential key for the success of effective conservation measures using asphalt pavement interlayers. With its digital specification assistant, TenCate Geosynthetics has made this selection possible via a professional tool available on the TenCate website www.tencategeo.eu.

The online tool asks the user four simple questions and draws on the answers to define the optimum product system for sustainable renovations.

The Paving Product Selector helps to define the optimum product system for sustainable road renovations.

Analysis of existing road structure and traffic loads

As a first step, the general condition of the road surface is estimated. The location and the type of cracks or larger deformations provide information about the source of the damage in the pavement structure. A selection of pictures showing some of the typical problems, helps to define the status of the existing road surface.

Following this step, questions are then asked about the load of traffic to be expected. The modeling assumes certain criteria, such as a standard axle load and moderate climatic conditions. The estimated traffic loads are graded into categories and linked to a certain road lifetime.

“With the specification assistant for asphalt pavement interlayers, we offer an easy-to-handle online solution to a complex issue,” said Gernot Mannsbart, product and application manager paving solutions EMEA. “The chosen product selection can be easily aligned to the respective national, applicable regulations.”

Defining the thickness of the top layer and the function of the asphalt interlayer

The next step is to clarify the thickness of the asphalt overlay. A thicker overlay will improve the stress-distribution and load-bearing behavior of the whole structure. On the other hand, the layer thickness will have to consider economic and geometric boundary conditions.

Finally, the intended functions of the asphalt interlayer must be defined. The stress relief and barrier functions are fulfilled by TenCate Polyfelt PGM 14. The reinforcement function is provided by TenCate Polyfelt PGL-G. If all three functions are needed, TenCate Polyfelt PGM G or Polyfelt PGM-B will be used.
