  • ISL/NASL

    • June 2–8, 2012

The Canadian Geotechnical Society, the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists, and the Joint Technical Committee on Landslides (JTC-1) are staging the 11th Annual International Symposium on Landslides (ISL) and the 2nd North American Symposium on Landslides (NASL) at the Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

Located in Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the conference is set in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, providing a stunning venue for the international landslide community to convene. This location is ideal for pre-, post- and mid-conference field trips that will provide delegates with a taste of the culture, geology, and landslide issues facing western Canada and the Rocky Mountains.

The local technical committee has developed a program of education sessions and plenary lectures to highlight state-of-the-art advancements in landslide research and practice.

  • EuroGeo5

    • September 16–19, 2012

Under the auspices of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), EuroGeo5 will be the 5th Regional Conference on Geosynthetics in Europe. The event is conducted every four years, with the last conference in 2008 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

State-of-the-art architecture, open spaces, and versatility are the hallmarks of the conference location—the Convention & Exhibition Centre of Valencia. EuroGeo5 will present the major geosynthetic applications including:

    • Transport (roads, railways, tunnels, airports)
    • Hydraulic structures (dams, reservoirs, canals)
    • Erosion control and coastal works
    • Building construction
    • Soil improvement and reinforcement
    • Mining
    • Environmental applications (waste landfills and soil remediation technologies)
    • Agriculture and aquaculture

All aspects of the use of geosynthetics will be dealt with, drawing on experience gained in case histories as well as research and development into new products and uses:
    • Testing and properties
    • Specification and certifications
    • Long-term experiences and durability
    • Design concepts and calculation methods
    • Installation and pathology

  • RemTech–2012

    • September 19–21, 2012

Rem Tech , specializing in the subjects of reclamation of contaminated sites and requalification, will be held in Ferrara, Italy.

Now in its sixth edition, and with an increasing number of exhibitors and visitors, RemTech 2012 focuses on the reclamation of contaminated sites and territorial requalification.

The 2012 event features: more than 30 technical and scientific conference sessions; training courses for operators, authorities, and decision makers; pilot testing and field demonstrations; foreign delegations representing major buyers; and a focus on technological innovation. Special attention is paid to the areas of redevelopment, demolition, and reuse of materials.

A unique section of the RemTech event is Coast Expo, now in its third edition with a special focus on the protection of the coast and sea. 2012 themes include: dredging of sediment, defense and protection of the seas, ponds and streams. Coast Expo also offers training courses on the protection of the coast and on the monitoring of coastal environment.

The next biannual geosynthetics conference organized by IFAI will take place in the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, Calif., USA. Co-locating is the annual Southwest Geotechnical Engineers Conference, sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and state transportation departments from the southern and western U.S. The Geosynthetic Research Institute’s (GRI) conference, GRI–25, will be incorporated as two half-day sessions.

  • Drainage and filter components for green roofs

    Sponsored by IFAI Expo

The Purpose of Drainage for Green Roofs

    • Manage rainfall without sustaining damage from erosion/ponding of water
    • Provides void space and slope to transport subsurface water
    • Connects to roof drains, gutters, and scuppers and conducts water away from roof
    • Removes surface water from impervious surfaces
    • Maintains optimum growing conditions in the planting media

The Purpose of Filter for Green Roofs

    • To prevent fine planting media particles from washing into the drainage layer
    • Prevents the reduction or clogging of drainage capacity
    • Usually a nonwoven geotextile, occasionally a woven fabric, is used

    Filter Components
    For retention:

    • The geotextile must have small enough openings to adequately retain the planting media
    • If not, soil particles will eventually clog the drain core

    For permeability:

    • The geotextile must have large enough openings to allow unimpeded flow of water
    • If not, hydrostatic pressure will build up and the planting media will not drain

    What are Geocomposite Drains?

    • A manufactured material that combines geotextiles and a polymeric core
    • The core composition varies in design and material
    • Geotextiles may be applied to one or both sides using heat bonding or adhesives
    • Geotextiles can filter, protect or hold water
    • Geotextiles are available in sheets or rolls that are overlapped or joined during construction
