FHWA icon retires

Jerry DiMaggio, Federal Highway Administration principal bridge engineer/geotechnical, retired Oct. 3 after a 33-year career with the agency. DiMaggio will continue to be active in post-FHWA retirement as he has accepted a position with the National Academies Special Project Division where he will be the implementation manager of the Strategic Highway Research Program 2.

A pioneer of the FHWA Geotechnical Engineering Circulars and many of the National Highway Institute courses in the field of geotechnical engineering, he represented FHWA in AASHTO committees, NCHRP panels, and many other activities and professional conferences.

DiMaggio said: “This new position at SHRP is very broad in technical scope and covers all soft and hard side disciplines related to surface transportation research. My focused responsibilities are related to mainstreaming of technology development and deployment materials, products and systems under this national research program. I will be addressing all aspects of surface transportation research from planning through system preservation.

“This employment change will not completely affect my visible and strong professional involvement with the geoengineering and construction community.”
