A geotextile-wrapped layer of stone fill is an important element in a $3.5 million drainage project in the Thunder Bay neighborhood of Fort Erie, Ontario.

The construction includes a series of storm chambers that will convey water underground, or in cases of heavy rain or runoff, store the water in the underground chambers for later release. These chambers can outlet the stormwater under and beyond the beach shoreline.

To accommodate the water exiting the storm chambers under the beach, the drainage system uses a layer of clean stone wrapped in geotextile.

The city’s engineer said that the project completed this year will help alleviate flooding in basements in the Thunder Bay area of Fort Erie and also improve runoff stormwater to protect the municipal beachfront there.
