Geocell application

GMA techline answers from Bob Koerner
Subject: Geocell application I would like to know the suitability of geocell as slope surface protection on acidic soil conditions. Can we apply geocell directly on top of the slope surface?
(Azilah, Malaysia)
Reply: Geocells are regularly used in exactly the type of application you describe. A geotextile is generally placed on the prepared subgrade and then the geocell is deployed in the customary manner. If the slope is very steep, steel tendons can be used, passing through the geocells extending to the top of the slope where they are connected to an anchorage block. The infill of the geocells can be soil, stone, or concrete depending on the conditions and anticipated service life.
Regarding the acid conditions you mention, the HDPE will not be affected nor will an underlying PP geotextile. If, however, you are concerned about the acidity getting through the system thereby polluting a stream or waterway, you should consider placing a geomembrane on the slope before the geocell is placed. This particular application has been accomplished in several locations.

Thanks for the information on geocells; I never knew just what the heck they were until reading this. Regarding geocells on everday surface protection, however; can they degrade the properties of the surface with time? If so, then that explains a lot.

Geocell application
Dear Sir, There are a number of geosynthetic solutions for use in pavements on strong subgrades. These include geotextiles, geogrids, and geocells. The usual goal with strong subgrades is improved lifetime performance over the non-geosynthetic solution. There are seperate design guidelines depending on the location of the geosynthetic within the cross-section. The geosynthetics literature addresses such situations.....Bob Koerner

Re: Geocell on soft subgrade
Hello Suprio,
We received the following reply to your comment from Dr. Koerner, GMA Techline:
The settlement calculations due to consolidation of the soft subgrade would be made as with any other situation. Of course, with only the light dead load of the filled geocell, it will likely be small.
In this case, I would consider a live load of a truck or construction/maintenance vehicle, and depending what you use, the settlement value will be greater and perhaps more realistic.

GEOCELL ON SOFT SUBGRADE
In case if a layer of geocell is placed on a soft subgrade of say CBR value 1, then what is the method of determining the settlement envisaged after 1 layer of geocell have been placed & compacted with a infill soil of say 'phi' value of 35deg.
