Bolivar to get $1.4M to fix, cover sand socks damaged by hurricane

The hurricane-beaten sand socks on Bolivar Peninsula in Texas will get about $1.4 million worth of attention from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), providing money for repairs and a new sand cover, according to information from the agency.

Hurricane Rita left some of the sand-filled socks deflated and others with punctures. All of the sand cover was blown off, said John Lee, Galveston County Emergency Management Office planning coordinator.

The 8-ft.-diameter geotextile sand socks run for 2.5 miles on either side of Rollover Pass on the Bolivar Peninsula, which is northeast of Galveston.

The county will pay the bills for this project, and FEMA will reimburse it for 75% of the $1.9 million total cost, Lee said.
