GSE announces patent for geocomposite

News | February 14, 2017 | By:

Houston-based GSE Environmental announced in a Feb. 14 press release that it has received a patent for CoalDrain, an engineered geocomposite designed specifically for coal combustion residuals (CCRs or “coal ash”).

The press release noted that the new product replaces the filter layer and the leachate collection layer in a typical Subtitle D liner system. Laboratory and field performance tests demonstrated that the CoalDrain geocomposite allowed for unimpeded flow of liquids and did not let coal ash particles pass through.

The patent (#9566775) issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office now protects the company’s years of research and development investment and interest in this field .

According to the release, GSE had previously introduced its Coal Ash Barrier System in response to increasing concerns and pending legislation regarding coal ash containment and potential groundwater contamination. It collaborated with utility companies, U.S government officials, and Ohio State University to develop the system that combines three of the company’s geosynthetic products that meet or exceed regulatory standards: Leak Location Liner, BentoLiner Coal Ash Resistant Geosynthetic Clay Liner, and CoalDrain.
