Update: Elliott Bay seawall project

News | March 24, 2015 | By:

Seattle, Wash.

Marine mattresses—geogrid bags filled with stone—have been installed along the new seawall panels. These mattresses provide a shallow water habitat for migrating salmon and other sea life as they travel along the seawall.

After the face panels and marine mattresses were put in place, zee panels were installed—a critical step in building the new seawall. These large, zee-shaped concrete panels provide a counterbalance and support structure for the new overhanging sidewalk.

Connecting the zee panels near Waterfront Park
Concrete pours in-between the zee panels in Waterfront Park were under way in mid-March. With the zee panels in place, the concrete poured between each zee panel will create a closure wall, or connection, between the zee panels. Once the closure wall is in place, the area behind the zee panels will be backfilled with soil.
