GSI fellowships announced

The Geosynthetic Institute has announced the students who are recipients of the 2012–2013 academic year GSI Fellowship Awards. To be eligible, students must:

  • focus on a geosynthetic topic.
  • have a passed the candidacy examination leading to a doctoral degree.
  • be recommended by his/her major advisor.

The GSI Board of Directors made the selections from a number of proposals from universities around the world. Announcements for the sixth year of the program will appear this winter, as well as announced on the GSI website.

Follow-up on a fellowship

A 2011-2012 academic year $10,000 fellowship from the Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) is helping to fund a University of Kansas School of Engineering graduate student’s research on improving the safety and stability of underground pipelines.

“I’m working to find the best ways to reduce the stress and strain on a flexible pipe and the soil that surrounds it caused by stationary or mobile forces on the surface,” said fellowship recipient Ryan Corey. “This fellowship certainly provides an opportunity of a validation of my research, and that’s great. This is an area that needs more attention. It’s my hope that this will promote the future use of geosynthetics in an area where they are not being used a lot right now.”
